Verify the laboratory and the specific test before relying on an accreditation logo. For cosmetic peptide powder, the useful question is whether the relevant activity, sample type and location are covered, and whether the issued report identifies your submitted material.
What does ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation establish?
Accreditation is evidence about a laboratory’s competence within its assessed scope. It is not an approval of a peptide ingredient or a guarantee that every service sold by the laboratory is accredited. The public description of ISO/IEC 17025:2017 covers laboratory competence, impartiality and consistent operation. ISO identifies the 2017 edition as confirmed in 2023; the age printed in its title does not by itself make a current certificate obsolete.
Start with the accreditation body’s directory, then match the laboratory’s legal name, location and accreditation number. Review the current status and the scope document associated with that entry. A certificate copied into a sales presentation can be a useful lead, but the issuing body’s record is the place to verify it. Preserve the document version and the date you checked it in the supplier file so later reviewers know which evidence supported the purchase.
Verify the organization
- Accreditation body and laboratory number.
- Legal entity and location performing the work.
- Current status and applicable scope document.
- Date checked and copy or reference retained.
How do you match the scope to the test being ordered?
Match the activity to the actual question, material and method. A general reference to chemical testing or HPLC may not be enough to confirm coverage of a particular peptide assay. The ILAC guidance series includes G18:01/2024 on describing scopes of accreditation. It also lists separate guidance on decision rules and measurement uncertainty, which address different parts of interpreting a result.
Send the laboratory the proposed sample description and the result you need before issuing the order. Ask it to identify which requested activities will be performed under accreditation, and whether any part will be subcontracted. Some laboratories operate a flexible scope. In that case, request the current detailed activity information and confirmation that the proposed work falls within the approved boundaries. An unfamiliar method name is a reason to ask for clarification, not grounds to assume that the laboratory is unqualified.
Define the work in the quotation
- Matrix or supplied material description.
- Analyte or property to be measured, method and reporting units.
- Accredited status of each requested activity.
- Performing location and any subcontracted work.
How should the report connect to the peptide batch?
Match the report to the submitted sample before using it to release a batch. Check the laboratory report identifier, sample reference, stated material description, dates and any noted receipt condition. A sample named peptide powder is difficult to trace if several different materials were submitted together. Agree a naming scheme that carries the supplier lot and your internal sample reference.
Then distinguish what was measured from what is being concluded. An identity result, a chromatographic purity result and a content assay address different questions. The reported method and units should support the particular purchasing criterion. Where a pass or fail statement is requested, agree how the laboratory will apply the specification and relevant decision rule. A result close to a limit may require attention to uncertainty and the agreed rule; it cannot be settled by rounding the number in a purchasing spreadsheet until it appears to pass.
Report review fields
- Report number and authorized issue or revision.
- Traceable sample identifier and supplier lot reference.
- Method, result, units and any qualifications.
- Applicable specification and basis for a conformity statement.
What should you do if the certificate and report do not agree?
Pause the accreditation claim and ask the laboratory to reconcile the documents. A missing scope reference, a different legal entity or an unexpected testing location can have an explanation, but the buyer should obtain that explanation before relying on the report as accredited evidence. Verify through independently obtained contact details when authenticity is in question.
Keep technical fitness and accreditation status as separate decisions. Work performed outside an accredited scope is not automatically false, yet it may fail a contractual requirement for accredited testing. Conversely, an accredited test may still answer the wrong question if the submitted sample or requested measurand was inappropriate. Record the resolution, any corrected report and the reason for the final acceptance decision. Hytanbio’s use of these standards as references does not assert that Hytanbio holds laboratory accreditation or that a particular batch has been independently tested.
Resolve the discrepancy
- Ask the laboratory which report version is valid.
- Confirm the status and scope for the actual activity.
- Check the contract’s requirement for accredited evidence.
- Retain the clarification with the purchasing decision.
Frequently asked questions
Is an ISO 9001 certificate the same as laboratory accreditation?
No. A management-system certificate does not establish that a specific test is covered by ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory accreditation. Check the laboratory’s relevant scope.
Must every method be named verbatim on a fixed list?
Not necessarily. Some laboratories have flexible scopes. Ask for the current activity details and confirmation that your work falls within those boundaries.
Does an accredited test report approve a cosmetic ingredient for sale?
No. It reports the specified testing activity. Product suitability and applicable market obligations require their own assessment.
